Intrauterine Insemination
Before GIFT OR IVF are considered, Intrauterine Insemination may be reccommended by your clinician in conjunction with Ovulation Induction. This procedure is performed at MACC by the scientist and nurse coordinator. It follows after the male partner has produced a sample, which is then assessed and washed by the scientist. The most concentrated population of motile sperm is passed via a small catheter, through the cervix and directly into the uterus. The sample is placed toward the top end of the uterus, close to the fallopian tubes, where natural fertilisation occurs. This optimises your chances of achieving a pregnancy, combined with the strategic timing of ovulation, whereby the Insemination is scheduled accordingly.
This procedure takes no longer than 5 minutes and is similar to having a pap smear. No anaesthetic is required and discomfort is minimal.
