GIFT (Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer)
MACC has become one of the leading specialists in performing the GIFT procedure. This procedure allows fertilisation to occur naturally within the fallopian tube. Similarly to Ovulation Induction, the ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs with FSH injections for approximately 10-14 days. On the day of the procedure, to allow for sperm preparation, the semen sample is collected 2 hours prior to the Egg Pick-Up (EPU).
Under anaesthetic the EPU is performed trans-vaginally using ultrasound to visualize the ovaries. The eggs are then collected and graded by the scientist to ensure the best quality eggs are placed back into the fallopian tube. The collected eggs and prepared sperm are then placed into the end of one fallopian tube, whilst you are still asleep. The fertilized egg (embryo) will then travel down the fallopian tube, and implantation will occur in the uterus, as in a totally natural conception. The GIFT procedure is an alternative for women who have bilateral tubal function and also an option for those with one only one viable fallopian tube. The surplus eggs are flushed back into the vagina where they are discarded naturally by the body. The optimum number of eggs to be transferred is discussed with your clinician and a decision that you feel comfortable with is made.
